The three most common tick species in New Jersey are the black-legged or “deer tick,” the lone star tick, and the American dog tick. All three are capable of transmitting disease to humans and pets.
While Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in Monmouth County, black-legged ticks can transmit other diseases, as can other species of ticks. See which ones in the table below.

Middletown/Monmouth County do not test ticks for disease. Ticks can be tested using the private labs found on this list.
