Being a CIT is an important role in camp, in which leadership skills, integrity, patience and self-control are nurtured and developed. Middletown Recreation welcomes volunteers (Grades 9-12) to assist at all three camp locations. Volunteers should be prepared for a week-long commitment at the camp of their choice, and may volunteer for multiple weeks.
Volunteers must register through Community Pass for the weeks they would like to contribute. They must also fill out and submit a volunteer application to be accepted into the program.
There is no cost for volunteering, but regular camp shirt fees do apply (see above).
Inclusion Option
The Middletown Summer Recreation Inclusion Program was started in 2013. This program is designed to allow children with special needs to participate alongside typically developing peers during summer recreation program. The inclusion program will be specifically targeted to children who struggle with disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), disruptive behavior disorders, anxiety disorders, Asperger's Disorder, and associated behaviors; however children with other needs are also welcome to apply.
Program Details
Children in this program will have the opportunity to participate in group social skills lessons and will participate in a token economy to reinforce appropriate behavior as well as the social skill of the week. Such skills may include joining a game, participating, turn taking, winning and losing, conversation skills, emotion recognition and basic manners. Staff working with students in the inclusion program will be provided training as well as ongoing consultation and support. The goal of the program is to provide children with an opportunity to participate alongside typically developing peers as they learn skills necessary for success in a recreation program. Inclusion Eligibility Requirements
Children enrolled in the inclusion program will need to be able to function medically, physically, and behaviorally with or without the guidance of support staff. They will need to be able to function in the camp setting with minimal to moderate supervision and support beyond the typical camp structure. Eligibility requirements include:- Must meet the grade requirement of the program
- Must follow the rules of conduct
- Must be able to tolerate and function, with assistance if needed, as a member of a larger social group (12 or more people)
- Must have the ability to maintain personal hygiene functions, specifically toileting needs
Inclusion Profile
In order to ensure a fun and safe experience, we request parents / guardians enrolling their child in the inclusion portion to fill out an Inclusion Profile. We would also request that the child and parent/guardian attend our intake day to meet the Inclusion Camp Manager and some of our staff.Inclusion Profile
