On Tuesday, Middletown Township held a flag retirement ceremony to properly dispose of worn, faded, or damaged flags ahead of Independence Day. Community members were encouraged to drop off their tattered flags in the designated drop box located at the Middletown Recycling Center (52 Kanes Lane) prior to or at the ceremony. Mayor Tony Perry kicked off the event by introducing Monmouth County Surrogate Maureen Raisch who led the Pledge of Allegiance. After, Mayor Perry shared patriotic remarks about the symbolism of our flag and the ideals for which it stands. Once the speech was over, Mayor Tony Perry, Committeeman and Ex Fire Chief Ryan Clarke, Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Dennis Beauregard, and chiefs and representatives from the Middletown Township Police Department, Middletown Township Fire Department, Middletown Fire Prevention Office, and Middletown Emergency Medical Services Department came together to salute the flags as one of our firefighters set them ablaze. Bayshore Middle School student Sara Alexandre also played TAPS to commemorate the occasion. Click HERE to view photos from the event.

Local Organizations Clean Up Herbert-Cuttrell Family Burial Ground in Honor of Middletown America 250

On Monday, June 23rd, Middletown Landmarks Commissioner Roseann Eteson hosted an abandoned cemetery clean-up project at the Herbert-Cuttrell Family Burial Ground (40 Old Country Road, Harmony). Correctional Police Officer Jonathan Smith from the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, Middletown Community Affairs Council members Mitch Gotesky and John Giordano, Middletown Landmarks Commissioners Peter VanNortwick and Roseann Eteson, and Township resident/volunteer Jaime DeRisi worked together to remove several fallen and dying trees from the cemetery grounds, including one recently downed tree that was so large that it damaged two sections of cemetery fence. During the last few weeks, Middletown High School North student Isabella Caruso and her mother, Rosanna Caruso, worked as a mother-daughter team, clearing out the brush and weeds throughout the cemetery while helping retain and preserve the vinca low-ground cover planted in the cemetery. These two teams cleaned the cemetery in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. One of the initiatives of Middletown's America 250 Committee is to recognize our historic landmark cemeteries where Revolutionary War Patriots are buried. Restoring these cemeteries where these war heroes are buried is an important part of the committee's mission. Thank you to these community members for all their hard work in clearing these overgrown cemeteries, preserving our local history, and honoring our Patriots!

NJAW Lead Service Line Replacement Program Door-to-Door Canvassing Continues
CDM Smith, on behalf of New Jersey American Water (NJAW), started a door-to-door canvassing effort related to the Lead Service Line Replacement Program (LSLRP) in Middletown on Monday, February 3rd. The canvassing and internal inspections are currently taking place in the Middletown Village Elementary School District in Area 3 on the map above. There will not be any work conducted on Friday, July 4th due to Independence Day. The entire canvassing is expected to take place over the next few months. All CDM Smith inspectors will wear co-branded (NJAW and CDM Smith) high visibility logo vests and will have NJAW-issued Contractor ID badges. Inspectors will introduce themselves and the program to property owners and will then ask to enter the home to inspect the water service where it enters into the home (typically in a basement or crawl space). The inspector will take exterior photos of the property and interior photographs of the service material and record the pipe material identified. Inspections generally take 15 minutes or less. At no time will residents be asked for money. Any customer that prefers to not have an internal inspection completed will be directed to alternatives to the inspections including self-reporting. The Middletown Township Police Department is aware of the canvassing. If you have any questions about LSLRP, please email njawlead@cdmsmith.com and LeadFreeNJ@amwater.com.
