Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger has been granted a Legion of Honor award from the Four Chaplains Foundation for his ardent support of all things veteran.
“I want to thank Colonel Dennis Beauregard and VFW Post 2179 for nominating me for the prestigious Legion of Honor Award from the Four Chaplains Foundation, said Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger, Ph.D.. “Working with the VFW on behalf of the Middletown Township Committee to promote the interests and memory of our veterans is one of the most important things we do. God bless our military and thank you for everything you have given us.”
Throughout his career in public service, Mayor Scharfenberger has gone the extra mile for veterans and veterans organizations. Notably he spearheaded creation of the Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee. The all-volunteer committee, the first of its kind in the state, is charged with advocating on behalf of local veterans.
Mayor Scharfenberger also continues to be a major supporter of the Middletown Fallen Veterans Commemorative Street Sign Program. He has given freely of his time to participate in each of the more the 50-plus street sign dedications held to honor the memory of Middletowners killed in action from World War II to present. The mayor also regularly attends programs and remembrances held at the local veteran posts including Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2179, American Legion 338 and American Legion 515.
The Legion of Honor Award program publicly recognizes and honors outstanding members of society whose lives model the giving spirit and unconditional service to community, nation, and humanity without regard to race, religion, or creed exemplified so dramatically by four U.S. Army Chaplains who gave up their life jackets and prayed together when their transport ship, the U.S.A.T Dorchester was torpedoed eighty miles south of Greenland on February 3, 1943.
