[ARCHIVED] Middletown prepared for potential storm impact during Labor Day weekend

Middletown Township is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Hermine and its potential impact on Labor Day Weekend.

“Middletown Township is working to ensure that our staff is prepared to respond effectively and efficiently should the storm impact us,” said Mayor Gerry P. Scharfenberger, Ph.D.

Steps the township takes well in advance of a storm include inspecting equipment and vehicles, monitoring fuel levels, and readying portable pumps and generators.

“It’s equally as important that residents make time now to ensure they are prepared,” said Mayor Scharfenberger. He noted residents living in flood prone areas are particularly being urged to stay aware and plan, before a potential storm strikes.

Forecasters are predicting heavy rain, strong wind and abnormally high tides starting on Sunday night. Higher than normal tides may continue through Wednesday.

Call JCP&L at 1-888-LIGHTSS for power outages, that’s 1-888-544-4877.

Steps that all residents can take to prepare in advance of a storm include:

• Have an emergency plan ready for your family and pets. Know the location evacuation routes; make an emergency family communications plan.
• Put together a disaster supply kit including a flashlight, batteries, cash, first aid supplies, and copies of your critical information if you need to evacuate. Make sure your car has a full tank of gas, cells phones are fully charged, prescription medications are filled and have enough money, clothes, blankets, diapers, formula and personal items to get you through several days.
• Stay informed. Follow the local news and weather channels. Register for township alerts at middletownnj.org/register. Township messages may be sent as emails, texts or voice calls. Updates are also posted to the middletownnj.org on Facebook at MiddletownNjTownHall and Twitter at middletownnj.
• Prior to the storm, bring outdoor items such as garbage cans, lawn furniture and other items inside. Remove debris and keep trees trimmed. Inspect outside drains to make sure they are free of clogging. Make sure generators are in working condition.
• Cars and boats should be moved to higher ground, especially if you live in a flood-prone area.
