[ARCHIVED] NJDEP Places Port Monmouth Facility into Operational Mode Due to Elevated Tides

Port Monmouth Flood Gate_news

Due to the anticipated rain and elevated tides predicted to reach our area and affect multiple tides beginning Wednesday evening, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) placed the Port Monmouth facility into "Operational Mode” on Wednesday, August 20th at 2:30 PM.

The amount of precipitation over the next 60 hours is predicted to be .75 to 1 inch of rain cumulative. During this time, the wind will blow Northeast at 25-35 mph with gusts of 50 mph possible.

High tide is anticipated to be at 6:49 PM Wednesday, with the tide predicted to be +4.1 with a level of uncertainty as high as +4.9 (rain in the region). The next high tide is expected to be at 7:23 AM Thursday, with the tide predicted to be +4.0 with a level of uncertainty as high as +4.7 (rain in the region). The following high tide is anticipated to be at 7:41 PM Thursday, with the tide predicted to be +5.1 with a level of uncertainty as high as +6.0 (possible rain in the region). The next high tide is expected to be at 8:12 AM Friday, with the tide predicted to be +4.2 with a level of uncertainty as high as +5.0 (possible rain in the region). The following high tide is anticipated to be at 8:27 PM Friday, with the tide predicted to be +4.5 with a level of uncertainty as high as +5.1 (possible rain in the region).

Based on this information, please note the status of the Port Monmouth Flood Control Facilities:

The Pews Creek Tide Gate is ready to function as designed and was placed in "Operational Mode" on Wednesday, August 20th at 2:30 PM. The operation will allow the gates to automatically open and close based on the tides while ensuring the interior drainage basin does not exceed elevation +5.0 NAVD88. It also allows for the gates to open during low tide cycles so the water can move in and out of the basin to assist the eco system.

The Road Closure Gate on Old Port Monmouth Road remains open, and no action is planned at this time. DEP will monitor tides and coordinate with the Township and County should weather change and require closure.

The DEP utilizes multiple weather and tide sites to assess the need for tide gates, pump stations, and road closure gates to be placed in operational mode in order to reduce flood risk. All operations are based on storm and tidal predictions and can change as storms approach and pass through the region.

Flooding

The Township may close some roads due to flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flood waters as water may be deeper than you think. You will be putting yourself in danger and your vehicle may be damaged. If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, we advise you to move your vehicle to higher ground tonight. If necessary, you can park at the Middletown Train Station parking lots. The Middletown Township Office of Emergency Management also recommends securing any loose items on your property.

Power Outages

To report downed wires or power outages, call 1-888-LIGHTSS or click the “Outages” link at firstenergycorp.com. Please remember, never go near a downed power line, even if you think it is no longer carrying electricity.
