The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory from 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 18th through 6:00 AM on Wednesday, June 19th. There is also an excessive heat watch from Wednesday morning through Saturday evening. The Township will be offering cooling stations at the Middletown Township Public Library (55 New Monmouth Road) and Tonya Keller Community Center (50 Bray Avenue) for community members in need.
The cooling station at the library will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and on Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The cooling station at the Tonya Keller Community Center will be open from Tuesday to Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM.
Tips from NWS and the Middletown Township Office of Emergency Management on beating the heat:
- Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, regularly. It is important to stay hydrated, even if you aren't thirsty. Limit alcohol consumption since it accelerates dehydration.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room for at least two hours daily.
- Stay out of the sun. Wear sunscreen if you do go outside or are in a room with a lot of sunlight.
- Check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.
- Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
- Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9-1-1.
