Middletown Township Committee Opposes Williams/NESE Raritan Bay Pipeline

The Middletown Township Committee unanimously passed a resolution opposing the Williams/Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Raritan Pipeline at the Monday, April 15th Township Committee meeting. This proposed 23.5 mile methane natural gas pipeline through Raritan Bay and Lower New York Bay poses serious environmental concerns to the Bayshore coastal communities as well as negative impacts to safety and the economy.

“This project will in no way serve the interests of the State of New Jersey or its residents and will only supply natural gas to New York,” said Mayor Perry. “Since the late 1990s, our communities have worked diligently to improve our beaches and our fishing industry is at its best— this pipeline would negate all that we have revitalized.”

On Sunday, April 14th, all 11 fire companies participated in a Large Diameter Hose (LDH) training drill at AT&T Headquarters in Middletown. The drill was held to practice the deployment of “pipelines” by simulating a car fire on the 5th floor of a parking lot deck in which the firefighters would need to create a pipeline from a local water source in order to stop the fire.
Fire Chief Steve Schweizer and 1st Assistant Fire Chief John Friedmann guided Mayor Tony Perry and Ex-Fire Chief and Committeeman Rick Hibell through the drill to give them an up close look at how the MTFD have been trained to respond in such an emergency.

Thank you to our volunteers for your time and commitment to keeping our residents safe.
