As National Preparedness Month comes to a close, Monmouth County OEM Coordinator Scott Nielson, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden, and members of the Monmouth County Board of Commissioners proudly unveiled 18 new “Know Your Zone” signs to Mayor Tony Perry and Middletown’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Department. The signs will be placed throughout the township to help educate the public on their specific level of risk from storm surge and coastal flooding. Monmouth County's Know Your Zone initiative is a public awareness campaign, overseen by the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office's OEM, to inform residents, businesses, and visitors about their location within the county's four coastal evacuation zones (A, B, C, and D) and enables more targeted and effective evacuation orders during emergencies. Residents can find their zone and information on preparedness by visiting the Sheriff's Office website, mcsonj.org/knowyourzone.

Mayor Tony Perry Kicks Off Community Leader Storytime Series at MTPL
Mayor Perry was happy to have his kids Reagan, Grant, and Kennedy be part of the event!
On Saturday, Mayor Tony Perry kicked off the Middletown Township Public Library’s (MTPL) Community Leader Storytime series. He read a book called The Cat Who Ruled the Town by May Nakamura. It’s a true story about Stubbs, an orange tabby cat who became the honorary mayor of a small town in Alaska. He was friendly, well respected by the townspeople, and helped rule the town for 20 years while charming tourists and leaving his paw print on history. After reading the story, Mayor Perry engaged with the kids, and they talked about leadership and what you do as a mayor. Once a month, the MTPL will be having community leaders such as police officers, firefighters, healthcare workers, local farmers, veterans, and more reading to the children. Visit mtpl.org for information about upcoming events!

Middletown America 250 Photo Contest's Last Hurrah!

After three months and many incredible submissions, the Middletown America 250 Photo Contest has officially wrapped up. From highlighting historic landmarks to relics from the Revolutionary Era, your photos have helped bring our history to life. Thank you to everyone who participated in last week's photo contest with the theme "One Final Hurrah"! Above is the winning photo chosen by Mayor Tony Perry. Robert Talmage submitted this patriotic reenactment photo he titled, "Monmouth — The Turning Point," that he captured at Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The original battle occurred on June 28, 1778. All the winning photos were featured on Middletown Township's and the Middletown America 250 Committee's social media channels, Middletown Minutes, and our municipal TV channel (Comcast Cable Channel 20/Verizon FiOS Channel 26). They can also be found on middletownnj.org/250photocontest. Thank you again to everyone who participated — and be on the lookout for new Middletown America 250 initiatives!

Middletown America 250 Spotlight: Volunteers Learn How to Clean Historic Gravestones
The gravestones before the class took place.
On Saturday morning, Middletown Landmarks Commissioner and Middletown America 250 Cemetery Subcommittee Chairperson, Roseann Eteson, led a gravestone cleaning class at Old First Church Cemetery (69 Kings Highway), located in the Middletown Village Historic District. Several volunteers participated in the class, including the President of Old First Church, Dominick Green, and local volunteers Susan Halle, Mary Kehoe, Kaitlyn Mulhern and Jamie DeRisi. Also present and checking in on the class was the church’s pastor Reverend Dr. Joyce Antila Phipps. All the students did a wonderful job bringing these gravestones back to life!
This effort is part of Middletown’s local 250 initiative to preserve landmark cemeteries where Revolutionary War Patriots are buried, including Private Joseph Murray, who died in 1780 and was reinterred here from his family farm by his grandson, William, in 1855. Although the burial site of Private Joseph Murray’s wife, Rebecca, is unknown, we celebrate her during America 250 as well for her support to her husband as he bravely served in the war, and because Rebecca was a Patriot in her own right as a Supporter of the Cause since she paid the Middletown Supply Tax that helped the war’s mission after her husband died.
The gravestones after the volunteers' hard work.
This churchyard is also the final resting place of Revolutionary War Patriot Reverend Abel Morgan, Jr., whose remains were reinterred here in 1888 from the Presbyterian Burial Ground on Kings Highway. As pastor of what was then called First Baptist Church of Middletown, Reverend Morgan ministered to the townspeople and the Patriots during the Revolutionary War, boldly supporting the Cause for Independence in his sermons. Six additional Patriots interred in this burial ground include: Private Job Compton, Private Matthias W. Covenhoven, Quartermaster John Stillwell, Corporal Obadiah Stillwell, Private John Taylor, and Private Jehu Paterson, who later became a well-respected Judge in Monmouth County. Second Major James Mott, Sr.’s burial site is not known, but he is associated with this burial ground as it was very likely he was originally buried nearby to this church where he worshipped. The next gravestone cleaning class is scheduled for Saturday, 10/25 (rain date Sunday, 10/26) at the Throckmorton-Lippit-Taylor Burying Ground, Penelope Lane, Middletown. If you’re interested in attending, please RSVP to Roseann Eteson at historic-cemeteries@middletownnj.org by Wednesday, 10/22.

NJAW Lead Service Line Replacement Program Door-to-Door Canvassing Continues
CDM Smith, on behalf of New Jersey American Water (NJAW), started a door-to-door canvassing effort related to the Lead Service Line Replacement Program (LSLRP) in Middletown on Monday, February 3rd. The team will be working in Area 2; Bayview Elementary School District, Leonardo Elementary School District, Fairview Elementary School District, and Navesink Elementary School District. All CDM Smith inspectors will wear co-branded (NJAW and CDM Smith) high visibility logo vests and will have NJAW-issued Contractor ID badges. Inspectors will introduce themselves and the program to property owners and will then ask to enter the home to inspect the water service where it enters into the home (typically in a basement or crawl space). The inspector will take exterior photos of the property and interior photographs of the service material and record the pipe material identified. Inspections generally take 15 minutes or less. At no time will residents be asked for money. Any customer that prefers to not have an internal inspection completed will be directed to alternatives to the inspections including self-reporting. The Middletown Township Police Department is aware of the canvassing. If you have any questions about LSLRP, please email njawlead@cdmsmith.com and LeadFreeNJ@amwater.com.
