This week, Middletown Township Police Explorers Joey Losquadro, John Brandshagen, and Preston Goode from Middletown High School South and David Reale and Shamar Ellis from Middletown High School North participated in the NJ Youth Law Enforcement Academy at Drew University. The week-long program is a police academy style sleepaway camp. Throughout the week, the boys competed in different areas of law enforcement such as report writing, motor vehicle stops, crisis negotiations, and more. They saw demonstrations held by the K9 Unit, United States Secret Service, the FBI, and the New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit. At the graduation, David Reale won the Academic Award and Joey Losquadro won awards for Arrest Search and Seizure, Motor Vehicle Stops, and Domestic Violence. Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) Detective Ric Cruz also received the Sergeant John Greene 2024 Perseverance Award. The award was named in honor of Detective Sergeant Greene who was an integral part of the program for many years and passed away in 2015 after a lengthy battle with a terminal illness. The award pays tribute to Sergeant Greene's lasting legacy by recognizing an adult who tirelessly participates in the program even in the face of challenges. Detective Cruz, who also runs the MTPD Police Youth Week Program, is a passionate advocate for youth involvement in our community. Congratulations to Detective Cruz and Police Explorers Joey, John, Preston, David, and Shamar on all their hard work and for making Middletown proud!

Monmouth County to Treat Curbside Catch Basins in Leonardo on Tuesday, 7/23 from 4-7 PM
The Monmouth County Division of Mosquito Control has initiated a program to treat stormwater catch basins in the streets of select neighborhoods with either a history of or current indication of West Nile virus activity. A catch basin continuously holding a bit of water is a classic habitat for Culex mosquitoes known to amplify West Nile virus. The purpose of this preventative effort is to squelch mosquito production in these basins. There is no evidence of West Nile virus activity anywhere in the county at this time. On Tuesday, July 23rd between 4:00 and 7:00 PM, the Monmouth County Division of Mosquito Control will be treating the curbside catch basins in the Leonardo section of Middletown. Click HERE for more information and to view a map of the treatment area.

In July 2026, the United States will mark its 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence – and Middletown is preparing to celebrate in a monumental way! Middletown’s America 250 Committee has already started planning thoughtful ways to commemorate this historic milestone by paying tribute to our nation’s past and the part that Middletown played in it. This multi-year initiative will run from July 1, 2024 through July 4, 2026. Much like the Bicentennial Celebration of 1976, this observance will offer a plethora of ways to learn about Middletown’s history before and during the Revolutionary War and explore the significant role it had in founding America. We are excited to embark on this journey toward celebrating this momentous occasion in our nation’s history!
