On Thursday, Belford-based business Reliable Automotive Equipment (RAE) welcomed the chiefs and several members of the Middletown Township Fire Department (MTFD) and Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD), as well as Mayor Tony Perry, to donate a total of three electric vehicle fire blankets: two for the MTFD and one for the MTPD. RAE also donated a dozen electric safety hooks. These blankets and hooks will help first responders gain control of electric vehicle fires and safely rescue anyone involved in them. We are so grateful for RAE's generous donation and support.

MTPD Hosts "Police Officer for a Day" Program
Earlier this week, MTPD Officers Kevin Mahon and Doug Haberman got to hang out with Nut Swamp Elementary School students Gradaigh and Jackson for "Police Officer for a Day"! At last year's National Night Out, there was a raffle prize where the winning student and a friend of their choice could be police officers for the day. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie nationwide. The MTPD hosts this event every year. The grandmother who won the prize said she had never seen her grandson, Gradaigh, get ready for school so quickly! Officers Mahon and Haberman picked up the boys and brought them to school. After school, the boys had their choice of pizza or ice cream and chose pizza at Atilio’s before being driven home by the officers. What a fun and great day shared by our officers and these students! Please join us the evening of Tuesday, August 6th at Middletown High School North (63 Tindall Road) from 5-8 PM for this year's National Night Out and a chance to win the next “Police Officer for a Day” opportunity!

Vegetation Being Cleared Around Historic Dempsey Pump House in Leonardo
Middletown Township was recently successful in getting the Dempsey Pump House building listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. Constructed in the 1920s, the building is located at the northwest corner of Thompson and Center Avenues in the Leonardo section of Middletown. The structure was never used as a residence, but served as a playroom, community space, and pump house. For the past several decades, the property has remained vacant with no public access. Now that the building is listed on the registry, the Township can access funding sources for historic preservation and restoration purposes. Currently, the property is being cleared of vegetation that risked causing further damage to the building. The clearing will also enable the Township to create some off-street parking spaces in the future. The Township recently received a $50,000 grant to help start the restoration process. The first step is to have architectural plans done by qualified architects who specialize in historic buildings. The proposed architectural planning will allow the Township to advance work that will make the site visitor-friendly while maintaining its historic integrity and act as an initial blueprint for how to move forward. There is also another grant application in for actual work on the building which the Township expects to hear about that in September.

How to Report a Neighborhood Safety Concern The Safety Council of Middletown would like to hear from residents about any safety concerns that may be occurring in their neighborhood. The Safety Council is an advisory board that reviews safety concerns in the township and provides guidance to the Township Committee and the Police Department. Some safety issues the board can help address include: - Speeding
- Parking on busy roads that impact traffic flow
- Roads that flood from little rainfall
- Traffic not adhering to crosswalk or stop signs
- Trees and branches that are limiting passage on sidewalks
- Sidewalks that are uprooted or damaged that could cause someone to fall
- Unusual amount of traffic or people congregating at a specific house in your neighborhood that could indicate possible illegal activity
- Garbage piling up on side roads or on a lot in your neighborhood
If you would like a safety issue addressed, please inform the Council so they can help you achieve a successful outcome. You can report your safety concern by contacting the Middletown Crossing Guard Office at 732-615-2100 ext. 2044 or by emailing bpfleger@middletownnj.org.
