Middletown Hosts Annual Mayor for a Day

On Thursday, Middletown was thrilled to host its annual Mayor for a Day program! Seven students from different elementary schools came to Town Hall to assume their mayoral responsibilities. The fun event began in the Mayor's Conference Room where they enjoyed pizza and discussed the importance of leadership with Mayor Tony Perry, Deputy Mayor Rick Hibell, and Committeewoman Kimberly Kratz. After, the mayors met members of our Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services Departments as they checked out the first responder trucks!

Each student had the opportunity to visit the Mayor's Office and sit in his chair as they signed their Mayor for a Day certificate as well as a proclamation recognizing May 27, 2024 as Memorial Day in the Township of Middletown. The certificates were also signed by Mayor Perry and brought to the young mayors' respective schools. The certificates were signed by their principals today and each student served as their schools' mayor.

To get a better understanding of their new role, the young mayors participated in a mini Township Committee meeting that included the Pledge of Allegiance, reading a proclamation for the record, and the opportunity to pass ordinances and make public comments. While on the dais, the mayors discussed different initiatives like reducing the amount of testing and increasing recess. Committeeman Ryan Clarke, Middletown Township Police Chief R. Craig Weber, and Township Clerk Heidi R. Pieluc were happy to join Mayor Perry, Committeewoman Kratz, and the mayors for this informative meeting.

Congratulations to our young community leaders!

On Wednesday, May 22nd, Middletown Township Police Chief R. Craig Weber was recognized as a Patriotic Employer by the Office of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Salvatore Soldano, an employer outreach volunteer with ESGR, formally presented Chief Weber with an award and pin and thanked him for contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employer participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve Force.

Chief Weber was nominated for this award by Sgt. Ian May, who currently serves as the 1st Sergeant of E Company 250th Brigade Support Battalion out of Port Murray, NJ in the New Jersey Army National Guard. Sgt. MTPD Welcomes Two New Officers

Pictured from left: Mayor Tony Perry, Officers Trevor Brey and James Davis II, and MTPD Chief R. Craig Weber

At the Monday, May 20th Township Committee Regular Meeting, Mayor Tony Perry proudly swore in two new officers to the Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD): James Davis II and Trevor Brey. The two young men recently graduated from the Monmouth County Police Academy's 106th class and are both residents of Middletown and graduates of Middletown High School South. Officer Davis is currently pursuing his degree in Law and Justice Studies from Rowan University.

What made Monday night's swearings-in even more special was that both young men are the grandsons of former police chiefs of the Highlands Police Department. Chief Howard Brey started working for the Highlands Police Department in 1959 and was appointed to chief in 1975, retiring in 1990. Chief Brey served the residents and Highlands Police Department for approximately 30 years, with 13 of them as chief. He passed away in 1998.

Chief James Davis Sr. was appointed to the Highlands Police Department in 1966 and was promoted to chief in 1990, taking over the reins from Chief Brey! Chief Davis served the residents and Highlands Police Department for 37 years with 13 of them as chief, upon retiring in 2003.

Officer Trevor Brey #418 had his badge pinned by his father, Howard Brey, while his mother, Karen, held the Bible for his Oath of Office.

Chief Davis (Ret.) proudly pinned the badge on his name’s sake and grandson, Officer James Timothy Davis II #417. Officer Davis' parents Michael and Kourtney Davis held the Bible for his Oath of Office.

Both officers were surrounded by proud family members and friends during their swearings-in. We thank them for their service and wish them a safe career.

Township Committee Recognizes EMS Week

At Monday's meeting, the Township Committee proclaimed May 19th through 25th as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in Middletown. This year is the 50th anniversary of this national recognition.

The Middletown EMS Department consists of five first aid squads: Fairview, Leonardo, Lincroft, Middletown, and Port Monmouth. EMS is a vital public service, and members of our EMS teams are ready at a moment's notice to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mayor Tony Perry invited Deputy EMS Chief Marco Fernandes and the over dozen volunteers in attendance to accept the proclamation. Deputy Chief Fernandes thanked the Township Committee for their constant support and recognized the volunteers for all their hard work and sacrifices. He also presented an EMS Challenge Coin to the Township Committee.

Middletown Township Community Affairs Council Restores Patriotic Bench In Honor of Memorial Day

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and dedication to preserving local history, members of the Middletown Community Affairs Council (MCAC) recently joined forces to restore a cherished landmark – the iconic Community Affairs Council bus stop bench. The bench, located at the corner of New Monmouth Road and Highway 35, was originally erected in 1976. On Wednesday, May 22nd, it received a patriotic makeover before Memorial Day thanks to the collaborative efforts of council members John Giordano, Larry Caminiti, Craig Finnegan, Michael Vitkansas, and Mitch Gotesky.

The project, initiated by concerned community members, aimed to refurbish the aging bench to its former glory. Over the years, weathering and wear had taken their toll on the bench, prompting residents to take action to ensure its longevity and continued use by commuters and residents alike.

“On behalf of the Township Committee, I’d like to thank the Council for spearheading this restoration effort,” said Mayor Tony Perry. “Through their dedication and hard work, the bench was sanded down, repainted, and returned to its original splendor.”

According to the Council, this endeavor truly exemplifies the power of community collaboration and civic pride. "By working together, we not only preserve a piece of our town's history but also create a welcoming and vibrant space for all to enjoy,” said John Giordano, Council member of the MCAC.

Council member Larry Caminiti echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communal spaces for the benefit of future generations. "It's our responsibility to steward the legacy of our community," he remarked. "Restoring this bench is just one small way we can contribute to the continued vitality of Middletown."

How to Report a Neighborhood Safety Concern

The Safety Council of Middletown would like to hear from residents about any safety concerns that may be occurring in their neighborhood.

The Safety Council is an advisory board that reviews safety concerns in the township and provides guidance to the Township Committee and the Police Department. Some safety issues the board can help address include:

  • Speeding
  • Parking on busy roads that impact traffic flow
  • Roads that flood from little rainfall
  • Traffic not adhering to crosswalk or stop signs
  • Trees and branches that are limiting passage on sidewalks
  • Sidewalks that are uprooted or damaged that could cause someone to fall
  • Unusual amount of traffic or people congregating at a specific house in your neighborhood that could indicate possible illegal activity
  • Garbage piling up on side roads or on a lot in your neighborhood

If you would like a safety issue addressed, please inform the Council so they can help you achieve a successful outcome. You can report your safety concern by contacting the Middletown Crossing Guard Office at 732-615-2100 ext. 2044 or by emailing bpfleger@middletownnj.org.
