Today, Middletown celebrated artists Stevie and Billy Van Zandt with a ceremonial street sign dedication on Wilson Avenue. They, along with their sister Kathi, grew up on Wilson Avenue in Port Monmouth which will now feature commemorative Van Zandt Way signs along the road. The street sign dedication was done in partnership with the New Jersey Hall of Fame (NJHOF). Mayor Tony Perry and the Township Committee, NJHOF representatives, dignitaries, community leaders, esteemed guests, and hundreds of residents gathered to pay tribute to the brothers and their family to recognize their legendary and lasting impact. Middletown native and former NBC news anchor Brian Williams emceed the event. Stevie Van Zandt is an acclaimed American musician, songwriter, and actor, best known as the founding member and guitar player of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Van Zandt has his own solo band called Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, which has been intermittently active since the 1980s. Beyond his musical endeavors, he gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Silvio Dante in the Emmy-award-winning HBO series The Sopranos, earning him multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards and an Emmy nomination. He is an Inductee of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Billy Van Zandt is a celebrated playwright, actor, director, and producer. He is the writer of the best-selling TV memoir Get in the Car, Jane (Adventures in the TV Wasteland) and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his television special I Love Lucy: The Very First Show. Alongside his longtime collaborator Jane Milmore, Van Zandt has written and produced a string of successful plays and sitcoms, including You've Got Hate Mail, Love, Sex, and the I.R.S., and Silent Laughter. As an actor, Van Zandt has graced the stage and the screen, with notable performances in The Godfather Part III and Jaws 2. "Middletown is proud of how our community members have contributed to the betterment of our society as a whole," said Mayor Perry. "We are always looking to honor residents who have made an impact, whether it be our fallen veterans who served from the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror, dedicated public servants, or those who have had a significant influence on arts and culture."

The Middletown Township Committee recently proclaimed April 2024 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Middletown. Last Friday, Township Administrator Tony Mercantante joined Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey (PCA-NJ) on Ideal Beach for its Pinwheels for Prevention® campaign. The pinwheel was chosen as a national symbol of prevention because it is whimsical and joyful — exemplifying the happy, healthy, and safe childhoods all children deserve. Middletown Township First Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Kelly spoke about the Township’s commitment to healthy childhoods and was accompanied by Station 5 East Keansburg Fire Company members who brought a fire truck. PCA-NJ board members and staff, Middletown Township officials, community residents, and nonprofit and government representatives “planted” a pinwheel garden at Ideal Beach uniting to create a world where every child is protected and nurtured.

The club’s mission is to make a difference by putting a smile on someone’s face. The club consists of homeschooled children between the ages of 9-13 years old. Each month, the club members meet to brainstorm and decide on an act of kindness. This month, they chose to thank VAC members for their service by presenting them with goodie bags. During their meeting, they also learned more about the sacrifices our veterans make.

How to Report a Neighborhood Safety Concern The Safety Council of Middletown would like to hear from residents about any safety concerns that may be occurring in their neighborhood. The Safety Council is an advisory board that reviews safety concerns in the township and provides guidance to the Township Committee and the Police Department. Some safety issues the board can help address include: - Speeding
- Parking on busy roads that impact traffic flow
- Roads that flood from little rainfall
- Traffic not adhering to crosswalk or stop signs
- Trees and branches that are limiting passage on sidewalks
- Sidewalks that are uprooted or damaged that could cause someone to fall
- Unusual amount of traffic or people congregating at a specific house in your neighborhood that could indicate possible illegal activity
- Garbage piling up on side roads or on a lot in your neighborhood
If you would like a safety issue addressed, please inform the Council so they can help you achieve a successful outcome. You can report your safety concern by contacting the Middletown Crossing Guard Office at 732-615-2100 ext. 2044 or by emailing bpfleger@middletownnj.org.
