Middletown Minutes

Middletown is Celebrating Read Across America!

Read Across America collage

On Tuesday, Mayor Tony Perry and Committeeman Ryan Clarke were guest readers at Lincroft Elementary School in honor of Read Across America Week, a nationwide event that celebrates reading and imagination.

Mayor Perry read What Do You Do with an Idea? by Kobi Yamada to 4th graders (Mrs. Tardio and Miss Brex, and Mrs. Alberti and Mrs. Williamson’s classes). He discussed the importance of not being afraid to share your ideas and the impact these young leaders can have within their own community and beyond. Committeeman Clarke read Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems to Miss Roedema's 1st grade class, and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss to Mrs. Presti's kindergarten class.

On Thursday, Committeewoman Kimberly Kratz stopped by the school to read Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin to Miss Roedema and Mrs. Das’s first grade classes and Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems to     Mrs. O’Neil’s kindergarten class.

All governing body members spoke with the students about leadership and answered any questions they had about what they do for Middletown – and more! Township Committee members will be visiting other local elementary schools next week to continue celebrating the week as well as helping foster a love of reading.

Fire lanes are for emergency vehicles only! Fire lanes are not for dropping off Amazon returns.

At the last Township Committee meeting, Middletown amended our ordinances governing fire lanes. Please remember that fire lanes are for emergency vehicles only. Johnson and Gill Statues Return to Town Hall

Johnson and Gill statues

The statues of local leaders Matthew Gill and William Johnson that were once housed at their namesake building, the Johnson Gill Annex, have now returned to Town Hall.

Matthew J. Gill (1921-1982) was the publisher of The Courier, a real estate broker, and a past commander of VFW Post 2179. William C. Johnson, Sr. (1902-1981) was the president of Keansburg-Middletown National Bank and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the United Counties Trust Company. Both men contributed greatly to our town, so their statues are symbols of their forever guardianship over Township business and government.

When the Johnson Gill Annex was demolished in 2019, the statues were moved to the Reference Area at the Middletown Township Public Library. As of February 2024, they are back at Town Hall in the Conference Room on the first floor.

MTPL Reference Area Closed Beginning Monday, 3/4

The MAC Players' Spring Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Premieres TODAY!

MAC Jesus Christ Superstar

The Middletown Arts Center's (MAC) community-based theater group, The MAC Players, is beginning its 2024 season with Jesus Christ Superstar TODAY! The MAC Players will be performing their spring musical this weekend and next weekend at 7 PM on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 PM on Sundays.

The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 50 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.
