Wawa Celebrates Grand Opening in Middletown
Mayor Tony Perry, Deputy Mayor Rick Hibell, Committeeman Ryan Clarke, and members of our police department and fire department were excited to join Wawa staff and customers for a coffee and confetti-filled morning!
On Friday, December 8th, Wawa hosted a ribbon cutting for its new store and gas station (1230 NJ-35), which is its second location in Middletown! Attendees were pumped to celebrate the grand opening with giveaways, free coffee, and the Hoagies for Heroes contest! Old Village Fire Company and the Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) competed against each other in this contest to see which first responder team could make more hoagies within three minutes. It was a close race, but the MTPD beat our firefighters and won the Hoagie Trophy which is now being displayed in the Police Department. Each team received a $1,000 donation to a charity of their choice. Old Village Fire Company's donation went to their all-volunteer fire company and MTPD's went to the New Jersey State PBA Survivor & Welfare Fund to support the families of PBA members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We thank Wawa for supporting our first responders! Make sure you check out their new location!

The program's presenters, pictured from left: Green Team members Steve and Pat Miller and residents John and Diane Burke
On Thursday, Middletown Green Team members Pat and Steve Miller held a community information session at the Middletown Township Public Library about how home and car owners can use the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and clean energy to increase home energy efficiency, value, and savings. Through their presentation, they described many ways you can offset upfront costs of moving from gas to electric in your home with tax credits and rebates due to the IRA. Pat and Steve discussed some of the societal benefits about going electric, including eliminating fossil fuel emissions and advancing climate goals in New Jersey. They also highlighted some personal benefits such as saving 40% on their energy bills by weatherizing and electrifying their home and vehicles and subscribing to Community Solar. HERE is a chart from their presentation that showcases the thousands of dollars available now through the tax credits and rebates. Middletown residents Diane and John Burke also shared their journey of constructing a healthy and sustainable home by using “Passive House” design principles. Passive House focuses on occupant comfort and health, and drives energy efficiency, resiliency, healthy indoor air, and reduced carbon emissions. This is Middletown’s first all-electric house with zero energy bills. Diane and John also discussed the benefits of using their electric vehicles. After the presentations, there was a Q&A. For more information about how to get started with doing an electrical makeover in your home, check out Middletown for Clean Energy.
