On Tuesday, Mayor Tony Perry attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook to celebrate National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries' official ownership! 

The lab has been conducting important research for decades, and Middletown looks forward to witnessing the work that it will continue to produce.

Jersey Shore Workcamp Repairs Homes for Bayshore Residents

On Thursday, Mayor Tony Perry presented a proclamation to volunteers from Jersey Shore Workcamp, a week-long Interfaith Home Repair Mission Project. The program began on Sunday, July 9th and ended today, July 14th. Group Mission Trips from Fort Collins, Colorado and St. John's Methodist Church of Hazlet sponsored this charitable initiative.

At Jersey Shore Workcamp, Christian youth and adults from across the country come together to donate thousands of hours of labor to make repairs and improvements to the homes of disabled, low-income, and elderly residents living in the Bayshore area. Improvements include interior and exterior painting, porch, step, and deck replacement, and the installation of wheelchair ramps. Through this year's mission project, 250 teens repaired 45 homes.

Mayor Tony Perry was proud to personally thank all the volunteers, church sponsors, and project coordinators, including Bill and Gail Bechtoldt (owners of Koch Florist & Gifts, located at 1870 NJ-35).

Mayor Tony Perry was thrilled to joined members of Lincroft Senior Citizen Housing on Tuesday to present local nonprofits RallyCap Sports (P.O. Box 81 in Sea Girt) and Middletown Helps Its Own (66 Main Street in Port Monmouth) with generous donations. Lincroft Senior Citizen Housing Corporation is an independent entity that provides rental housing and related facilities and services for elderly and handicapped families on a nonprofit basis. The Corporation offers housing through Luftman Towers and the Pavilion located off Hurleys Lane. Residents are appointed to the Board of Directors by the Township Committee. 

RallyCap Sports brings recreational opportunities to hundreds of children and young adults with special needs while also providing life-changing volunteer opportunities. Middletown Helps Its Own provides food, emergency services, and limited assistance with utility bills to Middletown residents. The donations will go directly to the organizations' important missions.

On Monday, Committeewoman Kimberly Kratz stopped by the New Jersey Blind Citizens Association's (NJBCA) barbecue to present a proclamation declaring July 10, 2023 as Camp Happiness Day in Middletown!

Camp Happiness was a camp-like experience that was created in 1929 and offered activities for blind and visually impaired individuals to venture out on their own in a safe environment, learn independent living skills, and participate in social activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing. On its 94th anniversary, Camp Happiness continues in the spirit of its founders by offering educational forums, arts and crafts, wellness programs, music and computer technology events, and peer support groups.

Now in its 113th year of providing free services, the NJBCA (18 Burlington Avenue in Leonardo) serves as a statewide resource and referral center for the blind and visually impaired, as well as their families and caregivers.

Last weekend, VFW Post 2179 (1 Veterans Lane in Port Monmouth) held its "Patriotic Rosary for the Consecration of Our Nation" event. The ceremony had several speakers, including Committeeman Ryan Clarke who read the "Second Glorious Mystery".

MTFD Chiefs and Middletown Fire Marshal Attend Newark Firefighter Augusto Acabou’s Funeral

On Thursday, Middletown Township Fire Department (MTFD) Second Assistant Chief Daniel P. Kelly and Third Assistant Chief Kevin Morrissey joined Middletown Fire Marshal Buddy Skelly at Newark Firefighter Augusto Acabou's funeral. 

Augusto was one of two Newark firefighters who lost his life in the line of duty last week in a cargo ship fire. The other firefighter was Wayne Brooks Jr. Both worked at the Engine 16 firehouse. Thousands of individuals attended the funeral and paid their respects to Augusto, who was posthumously promoted to captain. 

Middletown sends our heartfelt condolences to August and Wayne's loved ones, Engine 16, and the Newark Fire Department.

Township Surprises Longtime Middletown First Aid Volunteer John "Butch" Berth with Birthday Certificate

On Wednesday night, Township Administrator Tony Mercantante and Assistant Administrator Jim VanNest stopped by John "Butch" Berth's surprise 80th birthday party! Butch volunteered with Middletown First Aid for almost 50 years, is an East Keansburg native, and a passionate supporter of local organizations. Tony and Jim have known the family for decades and were happy to join Butch's birthday celebrations and recognize him for the impact he has left on our community!

Township Committee to Host Meeting on Monday, 7/17 at 7 PM


The Middletown Township Committee Regular Meeting will be held on Monday, July 17th at 7:00 PM in the courtroom at Town Hall (1 Kings Highway). 

The meeting is open to the public. The meeting will also be made available to watch or listen to by visiting www.middletownnj.org/tcmeeting. Calling all history buffs! Join the Middletown Township Public Library (MTPL) at this free, in-person program to hear about strategic errors and tactical mistakes that impacted the outcome of the Civil War. From the death of “Stonewall” Jackson to “Pickett’s Charge”, errors on the part of Jefferson Davis, D.H. Hill, Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, A.P. Hill, Richard Ewell, Henry Heth, and J.E. B Stuart led to a major loss of both initiative and manpower at Gettysburg.

This event will take place at the MTPL's Community Room (55 New Monmouth Road). Registration is recommended, but not required.

Check Out The "Legacy of Remembrance" Exhibit at the MTPL on Thursday, 7/20 at 2 PM

MTPL Legacy of Remembrance

Stop by the MTPL's Community Room on Thursday, July 20th at 2 PM to check out the "Legacy of Remembrance" exhibit! The exhibit consists of over two dozen black and white photographs featuring World War I monuments dedicated throughout New Jersey and neighboring states. Erik L. Burro, the artist who created the exhibit, will be there until 3:30 PM to share the stories behind the photographs.

Important Reminders from TOMSA


The Township of Middletown Sewerage Authority (TOMSA) would like to remind its customers about some important details.

Payments can be made at www.tomsanj.com. Click on "Payment Options" and customers will find four different options. You can pay online through its website by credit/debit card, mail in a check, or pay in person. TOMSA also has a Direct Debit program, which customers need to sign up via a form on the website.

TOMSA is available twenty-four hours a day for emergencies. If customers experience a backup in their curbside cleanout, they are kindly asked to please call TOMSA before calling a plumber.

During business hours TOMSA will dispatch its collections crew. After hours, weekends or holidays, customers are kindly asked to please call the non-emergency police number (732-615-2100) and they will dispatch TOMSA.

Middletown Partners with Local Nonprofit Save Coastal Wildlife to Help Horseshoe Crabs


Middletown Township recently collaborated with local nonprofit Save Coastal Wildlife to create informative signs about horseshoe crabs at Leonardo Beach and Ideal Beach. The bright yellow signs were installed to alert and inform visitors about this species that briefly comes ashore every year!

Save Coastal Wildlife also encourages community members to volunteer by counting and tagging horseshoe crabs. Visit www.savecoastalwildlife.org for more information.
