Mayor Tony Perry proudly stands with members and supporters of Coping with LM after the Township Committee proclaimed July 10, 2022 as World Airway Disorders Day.

|
|
At Monday's meeting, local nonprofit Coping with Laryngomalacia (CWL) accepted the Township Committee's proclamation recognizing July 10, 2022 as World Airway Disorders Day.
Resident Stephanie Hueston founded CWL after her daughter underwent surgery to treat her life-threatening laryngomalacia (LM). LM is the most common cause of noisy breathing in infants and occurs when the tissues above the vocal cords collapse and prevent children from breathing easily.
Middletown was honored to make history by recognizing this important day for the first time and encourages our residents to paint their nails light blue on July 10th for LM awareness.

Last weekend, five boy scouts from Troop 140 were promoted to the rank of Eagle Scout. Deputy Mayor Rick Hibell was honored to speak at the ceremony, present certificates, and personally congratulate the five young men on behalf of the Township Committee.
Eagle Scouts need to complete service projects to earn this prestigious rank. Below are descriptions about their service projects:
Eagle Scout Abhinava Pendyala organized the painting of a barn at Oasis TLC, a Middletown-based nonprofit. His project took 130 hours to complete.
Eagle Scout Christian Betten constructed garden boxes at Stevenson Park to help build Middletown's first Community Garden! His project took 52 hours to complete.
Eagle Scout Brody Clark gathered material and raised funds to make Easter baskets for children in New Jersey's foster care system. His project took 52.5 hours to complete.
Eagle Scout Luke Schaul constructed a 9/11 memorial at the Ken Tietjen Memorial Foundation. Ken Tietjen was one of the residents Middletown lost on September 11, 2001. He was also a volunteer firefighter for the Middletown Township Fire Department's Belford Engine Co. Luke's project took 55.5 hours to complete.
Eagle Scout Matthew Giallanza took care of the grounds at New Monmouth Church by weeding, laying down mulch, and planting flowers and shrubs. His project took 99 hours to complete.
Congratulations Eagle Scouts! Middletown is proud to call you our residents!

MTPD Hiring Class III S.L.E.O.s: Apply by Friday, 7/8!
At the June 6th Middletown Township Committee Workshop Meeting, the Township Committee unanimously approved a shared services agreement with the Board of Education (BOE) to hire Class III Special Law Enforcement Officers (S.L.E.O.s) to work in the 16 public schools to enhance the safety and security of the students, staff, and facilities.
“The horrific tragedy at Ross Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas once again demonstrated the need for all districts to increase police security at our schools,” said Mayor Tony Perry. “Public safety is always our top priority, and this effort will serve as a model across New Jersey.”
In response, the Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) has already increased patrols as of June 1st across the school district and armed Class III S.L.E.O.s will be in all public schools beginning this September. In an effort to secure enough qualified Class III officers by August, MTPD is currently accepting applications through Friday, July 8th to sufficiently staff the schools.

Spotted Lanternflies Have Returned: Tips for How to Prevent the SpreadNow that summer is almost here, spotted lanternflies are back! The spotted lanternfly is a serious invasive pest that feeds on sap from over 70 different plant species. Spotted lanternflies can negatively impact our agriculture, economy, and everyday life through the honeydew they excrete, which eventually turns into mold.
According to the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA), Monmouth County is in the "spotted lanternfly quarantine zone". Since spotted lanternflies are currently hatching and will not develop their wings until July, the Middletown Health Department advises residents to kill and report them to the NJDA when spotted. The Middletown Health Department also encourages residents to utilize the NJDA's checklist for spotted lanternfly quarantine areas, in an effort to stop the spread.
Click HERE to read the NJDA's checklist. Click HERE for information about how to report a spotted lanternfly.
