Middletown Receives 9/11 Survivor Tree Clone from NYC Parks to Plant in WTC Memorial Gardens

Last week, Middletown Township held a ceremony welcoming a clone produced from the original 9/11 Survivor Tree graciously donated by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (NYC Parks) to the Middletown World Trade Center (WTC) Memorial Gardens, located next to the Middletown Arts Center (36 Church Street).
The Survivor Tree is a Callery pear tree that endured the September 11, 2001 terror attacks at the World Trade Center. Due to how damaged the Survivor Tree was, very few clones exist from its cuttings. This is the first time NYC Parks has donated a clone to a municipality outside of New York City.
The cloned offspring of the Survivor Tree will be planted in the Memorial Gardens in preparation for the 21st anniversary of 9/11. Click HERE to read our press release about the ceremony. Click HERE to view photos from the event.

Congratulations to Middletown's Mayors for a Day!
|
|
|
|
|
Last week, members of Middletown's Township Committee, Administration, Police Department, Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services brought back the Mayor for a Day tradition!
Eight elementary students from different schools came to the new Police Station and Town Hall where they were able to take photos with Mayor Tony Perry in front of an American flag and first responder vehicles. The mayors then visited the Mayor's Conference Room, where they enjoyed pizza and discussed the importance of being mayor as well as what laws they would like to make in town. Several of the students suggested that the Township introduce an ordinance that would encourage random acts of kindness throughout our community. Mayor Perry wholeheartedly agreed! Each young mayor then visited the Mayor's Office where they signed their Mayor for a Day certificate and a proclamation recognizing May 30, 2022 as Memorial Day in the Township of Middletown.
Police Chief Craig Weber then gave the mayors a tour of the new jail cells and led them to the courtroom where Mayor Perry performed each mayor's Oath of Office. This was followed by a mini Township Committee meeting that included the Pledge of Allegiance, reading a proclamation for the record, and the opportunity for the mayors to make any comments to the public.
Congratulations to our young community leaders!

MTPD Holds Annual Police Memorial

|
On Friday, May 20th, Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) held its annual Police Memorial Service during National Police Week. The service was held at the Middletown Police Memorial, located at the corner of Kings Highway and Route 35. The memorial honored our fallen police and K-9 officers who served the MTPD.
The service began with a Call to Order and the Pledge of Allegiance. Father Jeffrey Kegley of St. Mary, Mother of God Church led the ceremony with an invocation. Police Chief Craig Weber and Mayor Tony Perry delivered speeches at the event, and Corporal Janine Kennedy read the names of Middletown's deceased officers. Members of the VFW Post 2179 laid down a wreath at the memorial, where friends and loved ones of the officers placed flowers after the ceremony.
The memorial concluded with a benediction by Father Kegley and Deacon Jim Neubauer, Colonel USMC (Ret.) of Holy Family, and TAPS performed on the trumpet by Middletown High School North student Ty Boehler.

The Township Committee was honored to have three very important presentations at last Monday's meeting! The meeting began with Middletown Police Chief Craig Weber promoting Sgt. Nicholas Haines who has been working with the Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) for almost a decade. During his time here, Sgt. Haines has completed multiple training courses, including Monmouth County Crisis Intervention Team, Methods of Instruction, and the Basic Narcotics Investigation. Mayor Tony Perry had the honor of swearing Sgt. Haines into his new role.
The Township Committee also recognized four Middletown students who will soon be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. These brave individuals were thanked for their service with a standing ovation.
The meeting ended on a cheerful note by presenting congratulatory certificates to members of the Special Forces Cheer Team who recently made history by winning the 2022 World Cheerleading Championship in the Cheerabilities Elite Division.
Shoutout to all these amazing residents, employees, and organizations that make Middletown so special!
