Middletown Veterans Display
American Flags on Garden State Parkway Overpass

The American flags are back over the Garden State Parkway in Middletown, and they shall remain there permanently!

The flags were hung by three members of the Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee: Rich Furlong, Bob Siemer and Dennis Beauregard, all Vietnam combat veterans who served with the U.S. Army and are members of VFW Post 2179.

"About a year ago this time we tried to hang the flags at the Red Hill Rd. overpass. Well, we put them up and then they were mysteriously taken down just a few weeks later," said Furlong.

Furlong said with the help of Star Ledger transportation reporter Larry Higgs, he and other Middletown vets learned they had to apply for a permit from the Turnpike Authority to fly the America flags. These patriots were the first in the state to get a permit to display the flags, and they will now be there for good.

"These men protected our flag in Vietnam and continue to this day," said Mayor Tony Perry. "Could not be more proud of this town and the patriotism of our residents."
