Middletown Township and VFW Post 2179 Host 64th Annual Veterans Day Parade
Last weekend, Middletown Township and VFW Post 2179 partnered to host its 64th annual Veterans Day Parade, which stepped off at Bayview Elementary School and ended at VFW Post 2179. This year's theme was "Thank You for Guarding the Gates of Freedom" and was dedicated to all veterans for their service.
The event began with an invocation by the Chaplain of VFW Post 2179 and the Chaplain of Auxiliary 2179. Following the invocation were the opening remarks and Pledge of Allegiance directed by Robert Lasowski. The Color Guard, Grand Marshal, Buddy Poppy Queen and King, and VFW Post 2179 Commander and Auxiliary 2179 led the parade with honored guests, including the Middletown Township Committee and Naval Weapons Station Earle Commander Ed Callahan and his wife Krista.
The parade continued with Middletown High School North and South's marching bands, antique cars, local VFW Posts, VFW Riders, American Legion Post 515, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 721, Middletown Elks 2179, and local scout troops. Emergency personnel vehicles, including our First Aid and Rescue, Fire Department, Police Department and Explorers, and Office of Emergency Management followed.
The parade concluded with a lunch at Post 2179, where members of the community were encouraged to bond with local veterans and sign cards for hospitalized veterans who couldn't be there to celebrate.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our parade and, most importantly, thank you to our veterans for their selflessness, bravery, and service! It was an honor to come together as a community and thank our nation's heroes.

Every Veterans Day, the Veterans Affairs Committee (VAC) places a wreath at each war memorial/monument heritage site in Middletown to honor those who have served. This year, the VAC added another location where a monument will be installed for those who fought in the War on Terror. Yesterday, members of the VAC and Committeewoman Kimberly Kratz met at the future location of the Township's veterans-only affordable housing complex in Belford to lay a wreath where the monument will be dedicated.
Thank you to all our veterans for their service. Click HERE for information about our memorial/monument heritage sites.

Students at Lincroft Elementary School learn how to properly fold the American flag with members of Lincroft Fire Company.

On Veterans Day, schools around the Township provided students with projects and lessons to give them a greater appreciation for those who have served.
Bayshore Middle School invited Mayor Tony Perry and Committeewoman Kimberly Kratz to view a flag mural that their 6th and 7th grade Social Studies classes created in honor of Veterans Day. The faculty and staff also donated a beautiful wooden U.S. flag that will be placed in the lobby of the future veterans-only affordable housing complex located in Campbell's Junction. Additionally, Lincroft Fire Company stopped by Lincroft Elementary School to fly its large 35' x 20' American flag hanging from Tower Ladder 200. Fire company members then worked with about 40 5th grade students to teach them proper flag folding etiquette.
Thank you to Lincroft Fire Company for adding patriotism to our community and for showing our young residents how the flag should be treated in a dignified way.

Middletown Lights up Green for Veterans
Greenlight A Vet is a national campaign that encourages Americans to show support for veterans by turning their porch lights green. Earlier this week, we posted on social media and asked people to join us by sharing a photo of their green lights. The campaign's Facebook page shared our post and people responded with images of their beautiful lights. Pictured above is a collage of the people who have participated, in Middletown and beyond, as well as Town Hall, which will be illuminated green throughout November.
Thank you to everyone who shared their green lights!

B.S.A. Troop 140 Morley Rangers hard at work while cleaning Navesink Beach!
Last weekend, the B.S.A. Troop 140 Morley Rangers participated in the New Jersey Clean Communities Mini-Grant Program by cleaning up Navesink Beach in the Sandy Hook area of Middletown. Altogether, the scouts cleaned up 16 bags of plastics and other harmful materials that were polluting our oceans. The Rangers will be utilizing their $500 grant to purchase some much-needed camping equipment. A big thank you to this amazing group for their hard work!
The Clean Communities Mini-Grant Program has been a tremendous success this year. Throughout the year, local non-profit groups cleaned up over 115 trash bags of litter from various locations in Middletown - that’s equivalent to 2,500 pounds of garbage from our local parks and beaches!
Cleanups will resume in the Spring of 2022 and dates are already filling up fast. Visit www.middletownnj.org/minigrants for more information and to participate in this program!
