Middletown Township hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for the veterans-only affordable housing complex that will be located in the Campbell's Junction section of Belford. The three-story building will have 12 rental units deemed solely for the honorable individuals who have served our nation.
Members of the Township Committee, Veterans Affairs Committee, Monmouth County Board of Commissioners, Middletown Housing Authority, Bayshore Village Senior Citizen Housing Corp, Township staff, and community came together to celebrate the beginning of this project. Mayor Tony Perry opened the ceremony by reflecting on how the idea came to life when he passed the empty lot two years ago and dreamed of making it a home for our veterans. Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee (VAC) Chairman Dennis Beauregard then spoke about the dire need for affordable housing.
According to the Housing Assistance Council, 5.2 percent of New Jersey's veterans live in poverty. "Veterans need more support," Beauregard said. "Middletown's 100 percent veterans-only affordable housing complex is an important example of how we can assist those who have already sacrificed so much for our country and ensure that veterans are treated with the dignity and respect we deserve."
.Monmouth County Commissioners Tom Arnone and Lillian Burry also spoke words of support for this project and presented a proclamation on behalf of the County. Middletown Housing Authority Chairman Richard Kolber then discussed the next stages of the project, including finding a developer. They will also be handling the application process.
The ceremony concluded with local veterans, dignitaries, and Township officials picking up shovels and breaking ground for a complex that will soon become a home for our heroes.

Come by the Middletown Arts Center (36 Church Street) this weekend to watch "Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting" by the Dunbar Repertory Company! The production's show dates are Friday, October 15th at 8 PM, Saturday, October 16th at 3 PM and 8 PM, and Sunday, October 17th at 4 PM.
Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting In this brilliant and timely play, Joe Louis, Paul Robeson, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Jackie Robinson, and Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey meet in 1947 to discuss a strategy for dropping a baseball bombshell: promoting a Black player to the major leagues. With baseball’s Opening Day one week away, Branch Rickey will call up Jackie Robinson to break the color barrier and play as the Major League’s first Black ballplayer. If he does, Robinson will face loud and heated opposition from virtually every owner, manager, and player as the play becomes a powerful vehicle for analyzing issues of race and society that go beyond baseball.
