Two Memorials Added to WTC Memorial Gardens to Mark 20th Anniversary of 9/11

9/11-related illnesses memorial, in honor of late Detective Lt. Joseph Capriotti
Earlier this week, two monuments were installed at the Middletown WTC Memorial Gardens (36 Church Street): a first responder/military monument and a memorial for Detective Lt. Joseph Capriotti and those we have lost due to 9/11-related illnesses. Detective Lt. Capriotti was known as the “keeper of the list” of the friends and neighbors who perished on September 11, 2001. He personally notified every single Middletown family who had lost a loved one that day – something that was of utmost importance to him. These two additions are part of several upgrades that are being made to the Gardens in honor of the 20th anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy. The WTC Memorial Gardens Committee is also raising funds to add a fountain called “The Rise of Hope” that will be erected near the end of the memorial pathway, giving a quiet space to reflect.

While at the installation, Middletown WTC Memorial Gardens Committee Chairperson and former Committeewoman Pat Snell was interviewed by Adam Worth and Reggie Gibson of Cine Selector, a local production company. They are currently producing a documentary for the Monmouth County Clerk's Office that will be part of a 9/11 exhibition at Monmouth County Historical Association's Taylor-Butler House. The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday, September 11th through Thursday, November 11th. For more information, visit www.monmouthhistory.org.

Thank you to Whirl Construction, Uras Monuments, and everybody who has donated money to these improvements! We appreciate your support as we continue to ensure that Middletown will never forget.

State Authorities Urge Residents to Report Invasive Spotted Lanternflies After increased sightings in Monmouth County, the Middletown Health Department advises the community to be aware of the Spotted Lanternfly. The Spotted Lanternfly is a serious invasive pest that feeds on sap from over 70 different plant species. It excretes honeydew while feeding, which results in mold covering the plant and anything nearby. While Spotted Lanternflies do not directly hurt humans or animals, they can negatively impact our agriculture, economy, and everyday life.
If you see a Spotted Lanternfly, take a photo of it and report it to the NJ Department of Agriculture (NJDA) or call 833-4BADBUG (833-422-3284). The NJDA is urging anyone who comes across the insect to report and destroy it immediately to help slow the spread. For more information about the Spotted Lanternfly, visit the New Jersey Department of Agriculture's website. For additional resources from the NJDA about the invasive bug and how to help control the spread, visit the NJDA's Homeowner Resources.
