Middletown to Commemorate 20th Anniversary of 9/11 with Service and Improvements to Memorial Gardens
|

|
|
|
Middletown Township will be hosting a memorial service on Saturday, September 11th in honor of the 20th anniversary of the World Trade Center attack. All members of the community are invited to attend the ceremony that will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Middletown World Trade Center Memorial Gardens, located next to the Middletown Arts Center (36 Church Street). This anniversary tribute will honor the 37 residents who perished on that tragic day by bringing together family members and friends of those we lost, religious leaders, dignitaries, first responders, and veterans.
“As decades pass, we must continue to honor all the lives we lost to ensure that they will never be forgotten,” said Mayor Tony Perry. “We hope this 20th anniversary service will enable our community to reflect, remember, and bring a sense of peace and hope as we move forward together.” To mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the Middletown WTC Memorial Gardens Committee is making improvements to the Gardens, which rest under a canopy of trees and feature a landscaped path with benches and a personalized memorial to honor each life.

The Middletown PBA Local 124 is hosting their first annual 9/11 Memorial 5K Race on Saturday, September 11th. The event will begin at 8:30 AM at the Middletown Train Station (22 Church Street). The route will start at the train station and go out 1.55 miles and back on Middletown-Lincroft Road. The turn around will be Thompson Middle School. The Middletown PBA is partnering with The Shore Athletic Club to create the 5K course. There will also be a half mile kids' race.
Proceeds from the 5K will go to a memorial scholarship fund created in honor of late MTPD Detective Lieutenant Joseph Capriotti. As "keeper of the list" of the 37 Township residents we tragically lost on 9/11, Capriotti personally notified every single Middletown family who had lost a loved one that day. As a result of his response to Ground Zero, he contracted cancer and lost his battle in June 2019. The memorial scholarship fund was created as a way to pay tribute to the tremendous impact he has made to the families of the victims and to our community.
Registration for the 5K Run and Walk costs $30. Registration for the Kids' Race costs $10. All registered participants receive a shirt.Click HERE for more information and to register.

On Friday, August 27th, the Kaplan family stopped by Town Hall and the Middletown Township Police Department to donate two pallet flags that Adam Kaplan created in honor of the upcoming 20th anniversary of 9/11. Adam and one of his daughters met WTC Memorial Gardens Committee Chairperson and former Committeewoman Pat Snell last weekend when she was selling 9/11 remembrance yard signs at ShopRite. Inspired by the committee's commitment to the Gardens, Adam decided to thank them and the MTPD with pallet flags.
While visiting from Hazlet, the Kaplan family also got a tour of the Middletown Township Police Department by Deputy Chief Paul Bailey. They were able to meet some of our officers, look inside a jail cell, and sit inside a police car. Adam and Irene's three daughters, Avery, Mia, and Kayleigh, all agreed that blaring the police sirens was their favorite part!
Thank you to the Kaplan family for your generous donation!

State Authorities Urge Residents to Report Invasive Spotted Lanternflies After increased sightings in Monmouth County, the Middletown Health Department advises the community to be aware of the Spotted Lanternfly. The Spotted Lanternfly is a serious invasive pest that feeds on sap from over 70 different plant species. It excretes honeydew while feeding, which results in mold covering the plant and anything nearby. While Spotted Lanternflies do not directly hurt humans or animals, they can negatively impact our agriculture, economy, and everyday life.
If you see a Spotted Lanternfly, take a photo of it and report it to the NJ Department of Agriculture (NJDA) or call 833-4BADBUG (833-422-3284). The NJDA is urging anyone who comes across the insect to report and destroy it immediately to help slow the spread. For more information about the Spotted Lanternfly, visit the New Jersey Department of Agriculture's website. For additional resources from the NJDA about the invasive bug and how to help control the spread, visit the NJDA's Homeowner Resources.
