 PBA Local 124's 9/11 Memorial 5K Race

The Middletown PBA Local 124 is hosting their first annual 9/11 Memorial 5K Race on Saturday, September 11th. The event will begin at 8:30 AM at the Middletown Train Station (22 Church Street). The route will start at the train station and go out 1.55 miles and back on Middletown-Lincroft Road. The turn around will be Thompson Middle School. The Middletown PBA is partnering with The Shore Athletic Club to create the 5K course. There will also be a half mile kids' race.

Proceeds from the 5K will go to a memorial scholarship fund created in honor of late MTPD Detective Lieutenant Joseph Capriotti. As "keeper of the list" of the 37 Township residents we tragically lost on 9/11, Capriotti personally notified every single Middletown family who had lost a loved one that day. As a result of his response to Ground Zero, he contracted cancer and lost his battle in June 2019. The memorial scholarship fund was created as a way to pay tribute to the tremendous impact he has made to the families of the victims and to
our community.

Registration for the 5K Run and Walk costs $30. Registration for the Kids' Race costs $10. All registered participants receive a shirt.

Township Officials Observe Microgrid Facility at Work

Microgrid
Mayor Tony Perry checks out the battery backup system at the microgrid facility at Philadelphia's Naval Shipyard.

On Wednesday, August 18th, Mayor Tony Perry, Township Administrator Tony Mercantante, Township Engineer Ted Maloney, and Public Works Engineer Susan Molzon along with Naval Weapons Station Earle Commander Ed Callahan and Community Liaison Dennis Blazak, visited Gloucester Township to view their power-producing solar array.

The group then headed to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard to observe a microgrid facility at work to determine if a similar operation would be beneficial to Middletown. This microgrid system, which includes natural gas generators and battery backups, provides supplemental energy to the shipyard business community and electricity to the power company grid during outages and on high-demand days.

The Middletown Township Committee recognized International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31st) with a proclamation at the Middletown Township Committee Regular Meeting on Monday, August 16th. Angela Pepe-Lage, who is the director of Crossroads at Lincroft Annex, and Kim Kratz, a chairperson for the Middletown Municipal Alliance (MMA), accepted the proclamation together.

Crossroads at the Lincroft Annex is a New Jersey licensed facility that provides alcohol and drug abuse service to all Middletown residents. MMA is a community-based volunteer organization that works to prevent substance abuse and other at-risk behaviors through education and awareness.

Middletown is taking additional measures to raise awareness about substance abuse. Town Hall has been illuminated purple throughout this entire month of August. There are also purple flags being displayed along Highway 35 in front of Town Hall. The Prevention Coalition of Monmouth County set up these flags to honor the 51 lives lost to overdose in Monmouth County as of March 31st this year.

New Town Hall Construction Update

Town Hall Construction
Within the last three weeks, our new Town Hall building has undergone a lot of change. Most of the windows are now installed and the exterior brick is continuing to move along. The interior walls are nearly complete and about half of them already have their first coat of primer. Some of the ceiling grids are being installed in the smaller rooms in preparation for lighting fixtures and ceiling tiles. The senior staff are currently in the process of selecting colors, floor coverings, and furniture.

Last Friday, members of the Middletown Township Committee attended the Parker Station Unveiling and Dedication ceremony presented by the Navesink Hook & Ladder Fire Company (NFC). NFC named the train depot for its well-known Cannonball train ride "Parker Station", a sentiment to Lee and Jessie Parker. Lee Parker was a longtime NFC firefighter before he was tragically killed in an accidental explosion at a U.S. Army Nike base in the Chapel Hill part of the township on May 22, 1958. His wife, Jessie, served with the company's Ladies Auxiliary until she passed away in 2001.

Lee and Jessie's daughters, Patricia Parker Schenck and Pamela Lee Marcellus, were there for this momentous occasion. Mayor Tony Perry was proud to speak at the event and to help ensure that the Parkers will never be forgotten in our town.

Spotted Lanternfly

State Authorities Urge Residents to Report Invasive Spotted Lanternflies

After increased sightings in Monmouth County, the Middletown Health Department advises the community to be aware of the Spotted Lanternfly. The Spotted Lanternfly is a serious invasive pest that feeds on sap from over 70 different plant species. It excretes honeydew while feeding, which results in mold covering the plant and anything nearby. While Spotted Lanternflies do not directly hurt humans or animals, they can negatively impact our agriculture, economy, and everyday life.

If you see a Spotted Lanternfly, take a photo of it and
report it to the NJ Department of Agriculture (NJDA) or call 833-4BADBUG (833-422-3284). The NJDA is urging anyone who comes across the insect to report and destroy it immediately to help slow the spread.

For more information about the Spotted Lanternfly, visit the
New Jersey Department of Agriculture's website. For additional resources from the NJDA about the invasive bug and how to help control the spread, visit the NJDA's Homeowner Resources.
