Middletown Announces Town-wide Initiatives to
Support Veterans

Middletown Veterans Housing

Middletown Township announced its ongoing initiatives to aid veterans since closing on the property located on Leonardville Road in Belford that will be transformed into 100 percent affordable housing units for those who served in the military.

The Township is also proud to support its all-volunteer Veterans Affairs Committee (VAC) to establish a “Thank a Veteran” program to offer veterans discounts at Middletown businesses, institute a “Veteran of the Year” program, as well as promote awareness of the state fee exemption for local metered parking for disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients.

“The Township Committee and I are honored to support the VAC in these important initiatives, as well as create affordable housing units deemed solely for the honorable men and women who have served our country,” said Mayor Tony Perry. The Township will be partnering with the Middletown Housing Authority on this project, which currently manages hundreds of affordable housing units in town.

Middletown Township Police Department just held its first Police Youth Week Camp of the summer! There were 65 children, between the ages of 8 to 11, who participated in this program that gave them their first exposure to law enforcement at the recruit phase.

The Police Youth Week program is a combination of classroom style learning and physical training. Participants learned firsthand about a wide variety of law enforcement training and techniques including officer safety, crime scene investigations, traffic enforcement, the K-9 unit, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard’s role in law enforcement. The program also emphasized the importance of citizenship and community policing.

The week concluded with a graduation ceremony on Friday, July 2nd at the Brookdale Student Life Center. Each graduate received a certificate and a well-earned cadet badge. Mayor Tony Perry, along with Police Chief Craig Weber and Deputy Chiefs Bob Stefanski, John Kaiser, and Paul Bailey, congratulated each child. Kudos to our Police Youth Week graduates and the dedicated officers who run this amazing program!

Watch "Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery" at the MAC in July

Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery

The Middletown Arts Center is hosting "Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery," a production by Dunbar Repertory Company. The show will take place indoors at the MAC's theatre (36 Church Street) on July 9th, 10th, 11th and July 16th, 17th, and 18th. It will begin at 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays and at 4 PM on Sundays. Tickets are General Admission and $20. Seating is first-come, first-serve.

"Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery" is the story of a young Black girl's coming of age in the South in the 1960s. Daughter is the main character, a 25-year-old narrator whose mother died when she was very young. She was raised by the women in the community, some blood-related, some not, and at the age of 12, she began her journey to womanhood guided by these very diverse, non-traditional older Black women. As she reflects, Daughter becomes a child again, reliving her vivid memories of growing up, recalling the rituals, the faith healings, the stories she was told, and the lessons she learned about survival, healing, faith, and mystery.
