Middletown Resident and Nurse Kathleen Malouf Recognized for Winning National Award for COVID-19 Inspired Invention

At the Middletown Township Committee Regular Meeting on Monday, May 17th, Mayor Tony Perry and the Township Committee congratulated Middletown resident Kathleen Malouf for being one of only two nurses in North America to win the Johnson & Johnson Nurses Innovate Quickfire Challenge for her COVID-19 inspired IsoPouch invention.
By creating a portable pouch that sticks to isolation gowns and does not interfere with PPE, Kathleen has made it easier for frontline workers to provide more sanitary and efficient care in high-stress environments. We commend Kathleen for her innovative spirit, as well as her passion for helping others.
As a recipient of this award, Kathleen can receive up to $100,000 in grants to manufacture her invention. She is currently seeking a plastics engineer/manufacturer to help make her prototype become a reality. We’re so proud to call Kathleen one of Middletown’s own and we wish her the best of luck!

Navesink River Road Reopens For Summer Season
Navesink River Road reopened to traffic today after the temporary closure due to work on the replacement of the bridge over McClees Creek.
“We have run into unexpected delays with the bridge replacement project, so we have decided to put it on hold until after Labor Day,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the County’s Department of Public Works and Engineering. “As we are about to enter the unofficial start of summer, we want to minimize the disruption of traffic and feel that this project is better suited for early fall.”
During the closure, the southwest retaining wall of the bridge was replaced. After Labor Day, the project will resume to replace northwest retaining wall.
The bridge is being replaced due to age and normal deterioration from vehicular traffic over the years.
In total, the County maintains approximately 1,000 lane miles of roads, 980 bridges and culverts and 250 traffic signals and beacons.

On Saturday, May 15th, the first Mini Grant Clean Communities litter cleanup was held at Croydon Hall and the athletic fields across the street. Thanks to the hard work of a local Boy Scout Troop and some adult helpers, volunteers were able to collect 12 full bags of trash that would have otherwise polluted our roads and waterways. A big shout-out to this group for their efforts in keeping Middletown a beautiful place to live! The Mini Grant Clean Communities program was launched as part of Middletown’s Earth Month initiatives and offers local non-profits the opportunity to receive a $500 grant to remove litter from an area in town in need of cleaning.
