Middletown Receives Grant from NJDEP to Enhance Recycling Program

|
|
|
Middletown Township was recently awarded a grant for $110,242 from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for its impressive recycling efforts.
Each year, the Township reports its recycling tonnage to the state from curbside collection, items collected at the Middletown Recycling Centers (52 Kanes Lane and Satellite Recycling Center at Middletown Train Station), as well as the Annual Recycling Tonnage reports from our small businesses, institutions, and multi-family developments.
“This grant is proof of the importance of these reports,” said Amy Sarrinikolaou, Middletown Recycling & Clean Communities Division Head. “We are continuing to increase the accuracy of our numbers for just this purpose. The better our reporting, the more money we will receive to help improve recycling throughout town.”
The intention of the grants, which were distributed to municipalities statewide, is to enhance waste reduction and recycling efforts throughout New Jersey. “Middletown was able to earn this grant due to the Township’s concerted effort to increase our sustainability by educating residents about the types of items that can be recycled at our centers, including Styrofoam, plastic toys, and plastic bags,” said Mayor Tony Perry. “We have already made plans to continue these efforts and this grant will certainly help us work towards that goal.”
One of the Township’s main initiatives is to preserve and enhance its sustainability so future generations can enjoy the beauty that we have today. The grant money will be used to continue to enhance Middletown’s already award-winning recycling program, such as improvements to the Middletown Recycling Center, increasing the Township’s recycling education efforts through videos and on-site education, sponsoring town-wide recycling events, and expanding access to recycling across town.

NJDOH Public Health Update: Guidelines for Fully Vaccinated Persons in Non-Healthcare Settings
On March 8, 2021, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention issued interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People. This guidance may change or be updated as the situation evolves. New Jersey Department of Health has posted guidelines for vaccinated people in non-healthcare settings as they apply to visitation, travel, quarantine if identified as a close contact, and gatherings. Click HERE to access the guidelines.
Currently authorized vaccines in the United States are highly effective at protecting vaccinated people against symptomatic and severe COVID-19. Evidence also suggests that fully vaccinated people are less likely to have asymptomatic infection and potentially less likely to transmit SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) to others.
However, we are not in a position at this time to broadly exempt fully vaccinated individuals from existing COVID-19 mitigation efforts, including requirements for indoor and outdoor gatherings outlined in current Executive Orders. This is because we are still learning how long vaccine protection will last as well as how much protection is provided against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. In addition, since most of New Jersey is not yet fully vaccinated, the chance that someone who is fully vaccinated could inadvertently spread an infection is relatively high. Until more is learned about protection, and vaccination coverage in the state increases, some prevention measures will continue to be necessary for all people, regardless of vaccination status. As with any level of risk, low/minimal risk does not mean no risk exists.
