Middletown Township Shines A Light On International Overdose Awareness Day
Mayor Tony Perry and the Township Committee proclaimed August 31, 2020 International Overdose Awareness Day in Middletown at Monday night’s meeting. The Township has partnered with the Opioid Task Force of the Prevention Coalition of Monmouth County to support this cause by displaying 99 purple flags around the municipal building to remember each life that has been lost in the County due to drug overdose as of June 30. Town Hall will be lit up purple through September 4 in remembrance of those affected as well as to celebrate those in recovery.
We encourage the community to reach out to the Middletown Municipal Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse and Crossroads at the Lincroft Annex should they or a loved one need help with battling addiction. Call 732-615-2277 or email crossroads@middletownnj.org.

Tornado Touches Down on Lincroft
On Wednesday, a tornado touched down on a baseball field on the campus of Brookdale Community College in the Lincroft section of Middletown. According to a statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), it tossed a set of metal bleachers adjacent to the field, then crossed over Phalanx Road into a residential area, with numerous trees sustaining damage on and around Hickory Lane. The tornado continued a little south of due east and passed near the northeast corner of the Swimming River Reservoir, causing additional tree damage. The tornado then entered another residential area near Swimming River Road and Normandy Road, producing a continued path of damaged trees.
The tornado lifted as it entered the Riverdale West Park in Tinton Falls, where tree damage was no longer observed. The tornado did not appear to cause any direct structural damage, though a couple of homes sustained damage from falling tree debris. The degree of damage is consistent with an EF0 tornado with estimated maximum winds of 80 mph and a continuous, relatively narrow path of around 70 yards in width. Thankfully, no injuries occurred as a result of this tornado.
Kudos to Middletown’s first responders for quickly ensuring the safety of our residents during this sudden weather change as well as providing the NWS with photos and information to complete this report.

The Middletown Township Committee was thrilled to recognize Middletown North wrestler Tyler Klinksy for earning the 2020 NJSIAA 113lb State Championship back in March at Monday night’s meeting. COVID-19 may have rained on his celebratory parade, however, Tyler recently received his championship ring, was named to the 2020 USA Wrestling Dream Team and will be leaving a legacy in both Middletown and Shore Conference wrestling since this title hasn’t been achieved by a Middletown high school student for 46 years! We congratulate Tyler on becoming part of North’s sports history and wish him continued success at Rider University.

What is the recommendation for wearing a face covering/mask inside while patronizing a business? According to the New Jersey Department of Health, accommodations can be made if someone is not able to wear a face mask due to a medical condition. Essential businesses that never closed (e.g. a grocery store or a pharmacy) cannot refuse entry to someone who has a medical condition and can’t wear mask. They may offer options, such as to provide curbside delivery and limit time spent inside store, but the person must be allowed to enter.
If the person doesn’t have a medical condition, but refuses to wear a mask, essential businesses can refuse entry but must arrange curbside delivery or provide a mask, if available. No one can be asked for medical documentation due to various laws that already existed, so people do not need to “prove” why they can’t wear a mask.
