Middletown Township held a presentation recognizing the Centennial of Women’s Right to Vote at the Township Committee meeting on February 18th.
February 9th marked the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment in New Jersey giving women the right to vote. Several women elected officials were invited to the February 18th meeting to celebrate this important milestone. Freeholder Deputy Director Sue Kiley led the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the meeting. Monmouth County Clerk Christine Hanlon then read the 19th Amendment, followed by Monmouth County Surrogate and former Middletown Mayor Rosemarie Peters who then read the Township’s proclamation commemorating this anniversary. Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso and Freeholder Lillian Burry were also in attendance. The Township also honored six elementary-school-aged girls for their recent achievements demonstrating leadership, commitment and passion. Township Committeewoman Pat Snell invited the young ladies to the front of the room and they each briefly explained what they did and what inspired their hard work:- Finley Elias, a 4th grade student at Lincroft Elementary School, raised over $17,000 in less than a month to benefit a koala hospital in Australia. She created a logo featuring the word “Love” with a koala hugging a tree as the “L” and put the logo on t-shirts, hoodies and other items. Finley and her family sold these items at Lincroft Elementary, Bayshore Middle School, where her sister Briella attend, and Monroe Township Middle School where her mom Katy teaches.
- Nut Swamp Elementary School 5th grade students Mia Collins, Emma Merces, Lilah Nicosia and Marlowe Schorr raised close to $2500 selling homemade crafts and baked goods at their holiday fundraising shop and donated it to the Monmouth County SPCA and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
- Brenna McCormick, a 3rd grader at Bayview Elementary School, was chosen to be featured on the new Thanks-A-Lot Girl Scout cookie boxes based on her cookie sales, an application she submitted about her experience as a Girl Scout and after she participated in a soccer photo shoot at a camp sponsored by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. (Brenna was not able to attend the meeting, but her achievement was recognized.)
Congratulations to all of these girls for being a wonderful example for our community!
