MIDDLETOWN, NJ —Middletown Recreation today announced a new Seasonal Surprise Bags program for seniors. The Department is preparing the activity bags for distribution in August to members of the Middletown Senior Center.
"These bags are full of old-fashioned fun and will be linked with live virtual content in August and September," said Recreation Director, Janet Dellett.
This summer edition of the bag will feature watercolor supplies, origami paper, playing cards, puzzle books, bubble gum, bingo cards, a journal with mindfulness writing prompts and more. All instructions are included in each bag and explain the many ways to participate. Live events include a weekly book club with the Middletown Township Public Library, art lessons with the Middletown Arts Center, bingo and trivia events to win prizes, craft tutorials and fun fitness workouts!
This program is made possible by Title III B funding from the Monmouth County Office on Aging. Subsequent bags will be enhanced with money distributed from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to support older adults during the COVID-19 emergency by mitigating social isolation caused by the need for social distancing.
"With the Middletown Senior Center remaining closed for the foreseeable future, this program will allow senior residents to connect with friends, old and new, and try some new activities they hadn’t considered before," said Senior Center Supervisor Kourtney Davis. "With so much variety in each bag, there is a little something for everyone to enjoy."
All members of the Middletown Senior Center (900 Leonardville Road, Leonardo) are eligible to participate in this free program (while supplies last).
