Public Works & Engineering
The Township Engineer manages all engineering matters for Middletown, reviews engineering plans and applications, works with residents, businesses, and developers to ensure that Township engineering standards are met. The Township Engineer also designs and administers all public works construction projects related to roadway, grading and drainage improvements and ADA compliance within the Township.
Street Excavation Permits
A street excavation permit from the Department of Public Works & Engineering is necessary to perform any of the following excavation work:
* Dig up, break, excavate, tunnel, undermine, or in any manner, break up any street;
* Any excavation in or under the surface of any street for any purpose;
* Place, deposit or leave upon any street any earth or other excavated material.
* Obstructing or tending to interfere with the free use of the street;
* Dig up, break, excavate or undermine or in any way affect any other public improvement within a public right of way.
Building Maintenance Division:
Responsible for general upkeep and maintenance of over 35 Township-owned buildings and facilities, including HVAC systems, janitorial services, and roof, lighting and fire/burglar alarm maintenance.
Fleet Maintenance Division:
Responsible for maintenance and repair of approximately 340 vehicles (cars, trucks, light and heavy equipment, including buses). Also responsible for responding to road calls, maintaining salt spreaders and snow plows and inventory of all parts and tires.
Park Maintenance Division:
Responsible for general upkeep and maintenance of Township-owned properties including over 35 parks and open spaces. These include over 60 athletic fields, 28 playgrounds, 22 tennis courts, 15 basketball courts, 3 roller rinks, 2 sand volleyball courts and two beaches. The Park Maintenance Division integrates scheduling and maintenance with the Recreation Department's various community functions and sports activities.
Recycling & Clean Communities Division:
Responsible for the operation of the Kanes Lane Recycling Center and the designated recycling area at the Middletown Train Station. This division administers contracts for curbside solid waste and recycling collection, in addition to NJDEP permit compliance. Clean Communities is responsible for roadside litter pickup, maintenance and trash removal at bus shelters and responding to incidents of illegal dumping.
Responsible for general road and pothole repairs, street sweeping, stormdrain and stream maintenance, leaf and brush pickup, roadside weed and grass control, tree work, roadway and parking lot line striping and maintenance of traffic control signation. Also responsible for the operation of the Township's Compost Facility in Belford.
All Divisions assist in community events, special projects and snow removal operations.
